Deepfake Evidence and Technology for Forensic Content Oversight and Research

Welcome to DETECTOR, an EU-funded research project tackling one of today’s fastest-growing challenges: deepfakes and synthetic media.

Synthetic media is content, such as images, video, audio, or text, that is partially or fully generated or manipulated by artificial intelligence (AI). Instead of being created through traditional human input, it is produced by algorithms, and examples include realistic CGI, AI-generated music, and voice synthesis.
Deepfakes are realistic but fake digital media created using AI that can show a person doing or saying something they never did. The term combines "deep learning" with "fake." While deepfakes can be used for entertainment, they are often used maliciously for scams, disinformation, harassment, and political manipulation.

DETECTOR’s Scope

Deepfakes pose risks to public trust, security, and justice. DETECTOR brings together leading experts to research new ways of detecting manipulated content and ensuring the authenticity of digital evidence.
